TEAGUE ISD PERFORMS ABOVE STATE AVERAGE IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
The 2014-2015 Texas Academic Performance Reports (TAPR) shows that Teague ISD scored at or above the state average on 12 out of 16 (75%) 2015 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). The 75% is an improvement on 68% from the 2014 STAAR assessments and a significant increase from 36% and 38% in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The increase in student achievement, as demonstrated by the improvement of our students’ scores on STAAR, comes as a result of a focus on aligning instruction, engaging students, and providing quality accelerated instruction as necessary. Our teachers have worked extremely hard in the classroom to provide a quality learning experience for all Teague students. The support from our campus administrators and assistance from instructional paraprofessionals have also been key components to helping our students achieve. We are fortunate to have great students who are excelling in our classrooms.
In addition to STAAR results, the TAPR data reflected an increase in the percentage of Teague High School students taking advantage of Advanced Placement classes. Advanced Placement (AP) classes are guided by the College Board and successful scores on AP exams can result in college credit being awarded. The increase in our AP numbers along with increases in both Dual Credit courses and Career and Technology enrollment demonstrates Teague ISD’s commitment to helping prepare our graduates to be college and career ready.
An increase in attendance rate was also noted from the 2012-2013 school year to the 2013-2014 school year. The 2014 graduation rate for Teague ISD was reported at 97.3%, well above the state average of 88.3%. We will use this and other data to drive our campus and district improvement plans to continue to work at providing the highest quality education for all of our students.
These increases in student achievement are impressive on their own merits. When the increase in the numbers of economically disadvantaged and at-risk students being served by Teague ISD are considered, these numbers become even more impressive. In 2010, 47.0% of TISD students were classified as economically disadvantaged. The state average at that time was 59.0%, resulting in TISD having 12% fewer students identified as economically disadvantaged than the state average. Currently TISD has 55.0% of our students identified as economically disadvantaged while the most recent state average is 58.8%, a gap of only 3.8%. In 2010, 35.8% of TISD students were identified as at-risk. The state average was 47.2%, allowing for an 11.6% gap between TISD and the State of Texas average. The most recent TAPR shows TISD serving 41.4% of the student population identified as at-risk while the state average is 51.2%, a current gap of 9.8%. While the TISD student population has increased in the number of economically disadvantaged and at-risk students as compared to the rest of the State of Texas, our student achievement has improved.
